Major League Soccer was founded in 1993 as part of the United States plan to establish a lasting first-division professional league. Play began in 1996, and the competition later expanded into Canada.
MLS uses conferences, a regular season and the MLS Cup Playoffs, and operates as a closed league without promotion and relegation.
